Achenes: The Tiny Fruits You Don’t Notice

An achene is a small, dry, one-seeded fruit that doesn’t open when mature. The seed sits loosely inside a thin, hard shell.

You’ve seen achenes before—those tiny “seeds” on the outside of a strawberry are actually achenes. Sunflower “seeds” and dandelion fluff are other familiar examples.

Though tiny, achenes play a big role in plant reproduction and seed dispersal.
